Severndroog Castle

Severndroog Castle is a park miniature, referring in form to the Indian fortress of Suvarnadurg, built according to the design of architect Richard Jupp. It was created in honor of Commander William James, who in April 1755 attacked and destroyed the fortress of the Marathów Empire located on an island on the west coast of India (the Indian state existing in the years 1674-1818).

Severndroog Castle consists of three hexagonal towers connected by facades on a triangle projection. The building, maintained in the Gothic style, 19 m high, is a valued vantage point. Its erection, at the order of the admiral's widow, began in the spring of 1784 - a few months after the death of William James.

William James was the son of an impoverished miller from Haverfordwest. In 1732, 11-year-old James fled to the sea. In 1738 he already commanded his own ship and served in the West Indies. In 1751, four years after joining the East India Company, he was appointed commander of the Bombay naval force. After returning to England in 1759, he continued to work for the East India Company and became a member of the Royal Society.
