National Maritime Museum

The National Maritime Museum (NMM) in Greenwich, along with the Royal Astronomical Observatory and the Queen's House Palace are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 2012, Queen Elizabeth II signed a decree, under which all these objects (along with the Cutty Sark sailing ship) were included under the common name of the Royal Museums in Greenwich. Admission to NMM is free, except for some temporary exhibitions.

The museum was opened in 1937. The exhibits came from private collections. The current collection consists of over 2 million items related to the history of Great Britain at sea: maps, plans, ship models, navigation instruments, works of marine painting. The collection also includes paintings and models taken from Germany after the end of World War II. The museum was often criticized for their unlawful possession, which they replied was that the war gains belonged to Great Britain based on the findings of the Potsdam conference.

The Caird Library operates at the facility, which is the world's largest maritime library.
