Eltham Palace

The Eltham Palace served as a royal residence for a long time, and now it has a museum. Its new part, added in the first half of the 20th century, is an example of the art deco architectural style. The palace and the adjoining garden are surrounded by a moat, through which you can cross the oldest working bridge in England. The facility is almost entirely open to the public, it can also be rented for special events.

According to legend, it is the Eltham Palace that is associated with the creation of the Order of the Garter, currently the highest British award. It was to take place during the ball, when one of the ladies lost the garter, causing widespread laughter. King Edward III raised it then, tied it on his own leg and established the Garter Order, warning that "Shame on those who think badly", which is the motto of the order to this day. Other legends mention that the palace is haunted by the ghosts of deceased servants here.
