Whitecross Market
Whitecross Street Market is a marketplace occupying the north of Whitecross Street, between Old Street and Fortune Street. Car traffic is prohibited here. It houses a small permanent bazaar and about fifty stalls with food and drinks, which are only opened during part of the week at lunchtime. Nutrition festivals are also organized here.
A Sunday market was active here since the 13th century, and in the mid-19th century, traders drew public attention to the need to build an official market. The "Pall Mall Gazette" newspaper then featured a series of articles written by journalist James Greenwood. The brutal living conditions of the poorest Londoners in this area, presented in them, provoked a public debate, which eventually resulted in the creation of the so-called Squalors' Market. Eventually it evolved in Whitecross Street Market.
