Markfield Beam Engine and Museum
Markfield Beam Engine is a historic building in London, listed on the National Heritage List of Great Britain. The grounds around the building are now a public park, and inside the museum you will find the historic Markfield Beam Engine built in 1886.
The 100 horsepower Markfield Beam Engine was developed to pump sewage from Tottenham towards The Beckton Works. It is a free-standing steam engine with an 8.2-meter flywheel that moves a 6.4-meter-long beam. The beam drives two one-sided plunger pumps. When the machine was running, it had an operating speed of 16 rpm, and each pump could carry 9,100,000 per day. Today, Markfield Beam Engine is a tourist attraction, attracting not only engine enthusiasts and history lovers, but also those interested in architecture or art: the engine is beautifully decorated, with Doric columns and acanthus leaves.
