Victoria Memorial
Victoria Memorial is a sculpture dedicated to Queen Victoria, erected in front of Buckingham Palace. At the top stands the winged goddess of victory, and at the base is a statue of the ruler herself and personifications of Justice, Truth and Motherhood. They were to be a tribute to the values professed by the ruler. On the corners you can still see sculptures representing Peace, Progress, Agriculture and Production. In 1970 the monument was inscribed on the list of Class I monuments.
The author of the monument is the sculptor Sir Thomas Brock. The sculpture was designed in 1901, but it was unveiled only ten years later. It was not fully completed until 1924, when the last elements were added - bronze sculptures. The whole is 25 meters high and weighs 2,300 tons. It is the highest sculpture depicting the monarch in Great Britain. A similar monument, except that dedicated to her husband Victoria and known as the Albert Memorial, is located in front of the Royal Albert Hall.
