Blackfriars Bridge
The Blackfriar Railway Bridge is a Thames railway bridge between Blackfriars Bridge and Millennium Bridge. One structure connects it with the first one, intended for pedestrian and car traffic. It is an arch bridge made of wrought iron, supported by solid columns, which provide additional support for the weight of trains passing through.
Blackfriars Railway Bridge, like the Blackfriars Bridge, was built according to the design of John Wolfe-Barry and Henry Marc Brunel. It was put into service in 1886. As part of the Thameslink Program, which has been in progress since 2000, the bridge has undergone a significant reconstruction. The platforms at Blackfriars station were expanded. A rainwater collection system was installed. A roof with solar panels was also erected over the bridge. It is worth mentioning that this is the largest of only three existing bridges powered by solar energy in the world.
