Shakespeare's Globe
Shakespeare's Globe is a faithful reconstruction of the famous Globe Theater with which William Shakespeare was associated. Oak wood was used for its construction, and the roof was covered with thatched roof (as the only building in London since 1666). Inside is a round stage surrounded by three rows of wooden benches, which can accommodate over 850 people. About 700 standing places are also foreseen.
The reconstruction of the theater is due to the actor Sam Wanamaker. It was preceded by thorough research and study of documents from the time of the existence of the original Globe Theater. The findings of archaeologists who found preserved fragments of the neighboring Rose Theater in the 17th century were also used.
Globe Theater burned down in 1612, after only over a dozen years of existence. Although it was rebuilt quite quickly, but as a result of protests and intervention by the Puritan community, it was finally closed in 1642. The building itself was demolished two years later.
