Temple Church
The Templar Church is a 12th-century temple, serving as the main seat of the Knights Templar in England. The building is about 17 meters in diameter and was built in a circle. It is adjacent to the rectangular presbytery formed several dozen years later. Currently, normal services are held in the church. Organ music concerts and choir performances are also organized here regularly.
Initially, the headquarters of the English Knights Templar was in High Holborn, built by the co-creator of the order, Hugo de Payens. In the mid-twelfth century, however, it became obvious that it was necessary to find a new, larger headquarters. In 1185 a new church was consecrated, near which residential premises, a training center and recreation areas were built. In the following centuries, the temple often changed owners. After the liquidation of the Knights Templar, it was taken over by King Edward II, who later passed it on to the Order of Saint John. At that time, two law schools were located here.
