Streatham Common
Streatham Common is a vast open space at the southern end of Streatham. A nature reserve was created here. There is also a garden here called the Rookery. There is a decorative pond and decorative rockery. Flowers and old cedars grow here. In summer, outdoor performances are organized. Streatham Common is also associated with a long tradition of playing cricket, dating back to the eighteenth century.
Within the former municipality of Streatham there are two such extensive commons. Next to Streatham Common is Tooting Bec Common. Both were acquired by the city and made available for public use in the second half of the nineteenth century, under the Metropolitan Commons Act of 1878.
The famous British architect Thomas Ripley lived near Streatham Common. His home is now known as Ripley House. Henry Tate, the founder of Tate Gallery, was another famous resident of the area.
