Crystal Palace Dinosaurs
Dinosaur Court is a series of dinosaur sculptures and other extinct species, which is located in the Victorian garden of Crystal Palace Park in London. Established in 1854 on behalf of the Crystal Palace Company to accompany the relocation of the Crystal Palace from Hyde Park.
Interestingly, the dinosaur models found in Court are the first such in the world. They appeared in London before Charles Darwin published his groundbreaking work on evolution theory, "On the Origin of Species." Dinosaurs are therefore an ideal representation of scientific thinking until the first half of the nineteenth century. It was designed and made by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins under the substantive supervision of Sir Richard Owen, a popular and controversial scientist.
Initially, the dinosaur models were classified as a second-class monument. However, in 2007 they were promoted to first class, which makes them an attraction worth seeing.
