Masoala hall

Local name: Masoala Halle

Located inside: Zurich Zoo

The Masoala greenhouse with climate conditions, plants and rainforest animals is located in the Zurich Zoological Garden. It is home to about 300 animals representing over 50 different species of vertebrates from Madagascar. In addition, various insect species live here. Animals can move here freely.

Masoala was opened in 2003. Plants and mushrooms from Madagascar were examined here to create an ecosystem that accurately mirrors that of an African island. The hall is heated, exposed and irrigated in such a way as to create climatic conditions of the rainforest.

Among the animals we find here representatives of species such as Lemur, giant tortoise, chameleon and gecko. The room is 90 m wide, 120 m long and 30 m high at the highest point and covers an area of 11,000 m². The Masoala greenhouse lies at an altitude of about 590 m above sea level in the valley between Zürichberg and Adlisberg. It is connected to the rest of the zoo by a tunnel.
