The National Sports Museum located in the Museum Park in Stockholm, on the island of Djurgården. Although the museum exists since 1992, the opening in the new building took place on June 16, 2007, because it previously housed the Swedish national arena. In 1995, Riksidrottsmuseet was nominated for the Museum of the Year Award.
The museum's goal is to present the history of sport from ancient times to modern times, as well as to conduct a debate on this topic in a public forum. Lectures and conferences as well as temporary exhibitions are held here. In the museum collection we can find about 5000 objects, as well as about 2000 prints, including: archives, photographs, films and literature on sport. Among the exhibits stand out: a riding machine by Gustaf Zander, skates by Prince Eugens or a winning boat at the Summer Olympics in Stockholm in 1912.
