Borgholm is a city in Öland and a popular holiday resort. Its most important monument are the ruins of a medieval castle that controlled the Kalmar Strait in the past. There are sandy beaches and several interesting museums in the area.
Öland is currently one of Sweden's main holiday destinations. Borgholm, situated on the Kalmar Strait, is one of its main holiday resorts. Communication with the mainland part of Sweden is facilitated by the bridge from Kalmar, thanks to which you can efficiently get to the island.
In the Middle Ages, there was a castle on the site of today's Borgholm, which controlled the movement of ships in the Kalmar Strait. Only its ruins have survived to this day. It was destroyed by a fire that broke out at the beginning of the 19th century. Due to the loss of its strategic importance, it was decided not to rebuild it.
Although Borgholm itself does not have many historic buildings, you can find interesting places in its vicinity. The main attractions in the Borgholm area include the Ölands Himmelsberg Museum, an open-air museum that shows what life in Öland was like in the 19th century. Also nearby is the modern Vida Museum and Art Gallery, which showcases works by Swedish artists Ulrika Hydman-Vallien and her husband Bartil Vallien and temporary exhibitions. An excellent family attraction is the Ölandsoasen and Ormöga Camel Ranch, where apart from camels, you can watch domestic animals and take part in farm work.
