Himmelsberg's Öland Museum is an open-air museum where you can see traditional Swedish farms, including houses with original furnishings from the mid-19th century and antique farm machinery. The open-air museum also houses a gallery with a permanent exhibition of the art of Öland.
Temporary exhibitions are also organized in the gallery. It cooperates with various cultural institutions across the country that borrow objects from their own collections, including The National Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and smaller regional museums.
The farms in Himmelsberg were renovated and converted into an open-air museum in 1959. Most of the buildings were erected of oak wood, some of them also used stone (e.g. barns). The local buildings are perfectly preserved, so you can see the housing conditions in the Swedish countryside in the 19th century.
