Gråborg
Local name: Gråborg
Gråborg, adjacent to the city of Färjestaden, was the largest early medieval castle in Öland and one of the largest in Sweden. Its oldest elements date back to the 5th century. In the following centuries, until the 12th century, the fortress was gradually expanded. Only ruins have survived to modern times.
The castle ruins have an elliptical shape. They are 210 m long and 160 m wide. Currently, you can only see the outline of the outer walls, measuring from 4 to 7 m in height. It is estimated that the wall was originally 8-10 m high. The entire interior of the building is now covered with grass. Archaeological research has been carried out in the castle area - numerous finds are kept in the District Museum in Kalmar.
At a distance of 200 meters from the ruins of the castle there are remains of the 12th-century chapel of St. Knut. It was abandoned in the 16th century, and only the western gable and a small arch have survived to the present day.
