Sagunto is a historic city with a history that goes back around 2,500 years and great monuments, the most important of which are the Castle of Sagunto and the remains of Roman buildings.
Already in the 5th century BC there was a fortified Iberian fortress in the place of today's city. In the following centuries, there was a Greek colony here, and after Rome took control of this area - a commercial port. The conquest of Sagunto by the Carthaginians started the Second Punic War, and after it ended, Roman influence strengthened here.
To this day, you can admire many monuments from this period. These include Roman theater and the ruins of several temples. Objects that were found during the excavations became the basis of the collection of the Archaeological Museum in Sagunto.
The city's most spectacular monument dates back to the Arab rule. It is Sagunto Castle standing on a hill. It stands on the site of the earliest Iberian settlement and its walls can be seen from a distance. The walls offer a wonderful panorama of the area.
In the city, at the foot of the castle hill, you can find several interesting churches, incl. Church of San Salvador from the 13th and the Church of Santa Maria, rebuilt several times.
