Monachil is a tourist destination in the Sierra Nevada mountains and an excellent base for active tourism both in summer and winter. There are plenty of hiking trails in the area, and in winter it is home to Europe's southernmost ski resort.
The town has nice, traditional buildings with tiled houses and many intimate guesthouses. It is also famous for its excellent cuisine and family restaurants serving traditional dishes. Due to its location on the border of the Sierra Nevada National Park, it is the starting point for both day and multi-day hiking tours.
The highest peak of mainland Spain, Mulhacen, with an altitude of 3,481 m above sea level, rises in the vicinity of Monachil. The Los Cahorros hiking trail along the Monachil river is also very popular. On its route there is a 55-meter suspension bridge and numerous fancy rock formations. In summer, a popular destination for excursions is also the Veleta Peak Observatory, located on one of the Sierra Nevada peaks, open to visitors.
In winter, the biggest attraction of Monachil is the Sierra Nevada Ski Resort with over 100 km of slopes of various difficulty levels. several international championship competitions were held on its slopes.
