Puerta de Toledo is a gate located in the southwest of Madrid. It was built in the shape of a triumphal arch in honor of King Ferdinand VII and commemorates the regaining of independence after the French occupation. The monument is 19 meters high and consists of three massive granite arcades. In the past it was an entrance gate to the city. It was built relatively recently, only in the nineteenth century. In 1996, it was entered in the Bien de Interés Cultural Heritage Register.
The Puerta de Toledo gate was built between 1813 and 1827, and was designed by the famous Spanish architect Antonio Aguado. The monument was restored in 1995. The gate is located in the middle of the Glorieta de Toledo roundabout. There were three other gates of the same name in Madrid before.
