Alameda Castle

Local name: Castillo de la Alameda

La Alameda Castle was erected in the 15th century on a small hill at the foot of the village of La Alameda. This ruined building is one of the four medieval fortifications that have survived in Madrid, along with the castle of Viñuelas and the remains of the Arab and Christian walls of the capital. The castle is small, its internal area is about 200 m². Only two towers and part of the walls have survived to modern times.

The castle was built in the years 1431-1476, on the order of the powerful Mendoza family. Archaeological excavations carried out in the eighties showed that the building was erected on the remains of ancient buildings, both before Roman and late Roman. After a period of splendor in the eighteenth century, the castle was abandoned, while in the nineteenth century it was looted, and its fragments were used to build the pantheon Fernán Núñez.
