The Museu Geològic del Seminari in Barcelona has gathered a rich collection of fossils, which includes around 70,000 exhibits from different geological periods. The institution was awarded the St. George, for his contribution to Catalan science. The museum houses a library, laboratory and archives.
The museum focuses primarily on palaeontological research, fossil organisms are at the center of its interests. Scientists derive detailed knowledge about the past life on Earth from the objects provided on an ongoing basis.
The founder of the museum was a Catalan palaeontologist - Jaume Almera i Comas, it was established in the 1870s. Almera was responsible for creating the first geological map of the entire province of Barcelona. Before the present-day geological museum in Catalonia started operating, research on the fossils of this region was conducted by the Natural History Cabinet (it existed from the beginning of the 19th century).
