The Museum of Contemporary Art, popularly known as MACBA, is housed in a modern, impressive building in the Raval district. It presents several permanent exhibitions related to the work of Catalan artists of the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, such as Tapies, Klee and Tores. Numerous temporary exhibitions are also organized here.
The museum was founded in 1985 after several decades of efforts by a group of artists and art historians. His building was designed by the famous American architect Richard Meier. The resulting building was designed so that the light spreads in it along straight lines that intersect with each other. It is kept in white, with elements made of glass and metal.
The collection that is shown in the Museum has been collected since the mid-twentieth century. It shows contemporary Catalan art, painting, sculpture, multimedia installations, graphics and drawing. Permanent exhibitions are supplemented by temporary exhibitions, which usually take place several at a time. The museum is also a place of many cultural events.
