Font del Geni Català is a historic fountain built in the Empire style. It was dedicated to the memory of the Minister of War Francisco Bernaldo de Quiros and Mariño de Lobera. It was made entirely of white marble. At its top is a winged figure of an ephebe holding a star symbolizing Progress in one hand and a palm symbolizing Victory in the other. The gear and anchor are attributes of Technology.
Female figures sitting at the foot of the ephebe are allegories of the Catalan provinces, while the streams of water flowing from the mouths of marble lions are the four largest rivers of the region: Llobregat, Segre, Ter and Ebro.
The construction of the monument was decided by the City Council, the project was developed by Francesc Daniel Molina and Casamajó in the 1850s. The fountain underwent several renovations, it was renovated, among others after the end of the civil war, the sculptor Frederic Marès undertook the task.
