The Bridge of Sighs or Bishop's Bridge is a neo-Gothic roofed bridge connecting the seat of the President of Catalonia and the Generalitat in Barcelona's Barri Gotic district. It is based on one arch and on each side has three richly decorated windows with stonework decorations.
The bridge was built in 1929. The architect, Joan Rubió and Bellver wanted to put Barri Gotic in various points referring to the style of the entire district buildings. However, he only received permission to build the Bridge of Sighs on Carre del Brisbe. Legend has it that, furious at the city authorities, he added an additional element to the building in the form of a skull pierced with a sword. Anyone who looks at her under the bridge can expect imminent misfortune.
The bridge itself is perfectly integrated into the buildings of the district. Many tourists consider it much older than it actually is. Thanks to the openwork stone decorations, the building looks very light. The intricate traceries are particularly striking.
