Saint James Square is one of the main squares of Barcelona. There is the town hall and the seat of the government of Catalonia, Generalitat. The square is surrounded by buildings from different eras. There are also many restaurants and cafes. It is a place of political rallies and demonstrations.
The square took its name from the church of St. James located until the 19th century. After its demolition, the current urban space was created. Medieval tenement houses that were used by the City Council received then the neoclassical main facade. The side facade still represents the Gothic style. A meeting room is also a good example of this style.
The square was a place where in ancient times the main streets of the city intersected. The temple of Augustus stood here then. Currently, apart from the Town Hall, the most important building of the square is the Renaissance building of the seat of the Catalan authorities. Around the square there are mainly 18th and 19th century tenement houses. On the square, you can often see the residents of Barcelona dancing the national dance, sardana.
