Plaça del Rei is a historic square in the oldest district of Barcelona - Barrio Gótico. It is surrounded by monumental Gothic and Renaissance buildings belonging to the Royal Palace. The most important part of this complex is the Saló del Tinell building with a high tower (Mirador del Rey Martín) and the adjacent Chapel of Saint Agata (Capella de Santa Àgata).
Noteworthy are the Lloctinent Palace and Casa Padellàs, where you can see the exhibition of the Barcelona History Museum today. In the south-eastern part of the square, the sculpture "Topos V" was set up, created by the Basque artist Eduardo Chillida Juantegui.
From the beginning of the second century, the palace complex was the seat of the Barcelona County Government and the rulers of the Kingdom of Aragon. In the Middle Ages, bullfights and witch courts were organized on the square. Today, numerous concerts are held here - the square is famous for its excellent acoustics.
