Basílica de la Mercè in Barcelona is a baroque temple from the 18th century. The attention of tourists visiting it is dome above the presbytery, on which a figure with the image of the Virgin of Merced was placed. The interior is very richly decorated, the walls and vaults are covered with antique frescoes.
The church was built on the Latin cross plan, has three naves. The entrance door is surrounded by a decorative portal with two slender columns. The facade is decorated with multiple pilasters. The octagonal belfry towers over the church.
The author of the temple design was Josep Mas and Dordal. She obtained the title of minor basilica in 1918, i.e. the 100th anniversary of the apparition of Mary to Piotr Nalosco, founder of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy for the Redemption of Slaves. The title was given by Pope Benedict XV.
