Portorož, which lies on the coast, is the most famous spa town in Slovenia. There are thermal waters here, and additionally since the medieval times the local brine and salt extracted from them have been used.
Portorož is primarily a seaside and spa resort and its buildings correspond to this function. There are mainly hotels, guesthouses, bars, entertainment venues and spa facilities. On the outskirts of the city you can see historic brine evaporation ponds from which salt was extracted in the past.
The first healing procedures in Portorož began to be used by Benedictine monks in the Middle Ages. They used the local brines to treat rheumatic diseases, swellings and abscesses. The spa developed on a large scale during the interwar period, when after the agreement with Rapallo it came under Italian rule.
The oldest buildings in Portorož are the Palace Hotel and the local promenade, marked out at the time of the emergence of a modern spa. Today, the whole city is alive thanks to incoming patients and tourists. The surrounding beaches are perfectly organized and you can enjoy water sports such as kayaking, diving and jet ski.
The village also has well-developed spa and wellness facilities, with mineral-thermal pools, saunas, wellness and massage centers. Tourists can also take advantage of walking paths, mini golf, tennis courts and several casinos.
