Kobarid, also called Caporetto from Italy, is a small town at the foot of the Julian Alps. The area is conducive to active tourism, and the town is known primarily for the world's largest mausoleum of Italian soldiers fighting during World War I.

The history of the city dates back to ancient times and the times of Roman rule, but the place has never had a very large commercial or administrative importance. It did not go down in history until the second half of 1917, when a great battle took place between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies in the valley of the Soča River flowing through the city.

The bloody clash led to the deaths of many thousands of soldiers on both sides, and Ernest Hemingway described them in his book "Farewell to Arms". After World War I, the Italians erected a mausoleum of their soldiers in Kobarid, located on the slopes and at the foot of the hill, at the top of which is the church of St. Anthony. Today it is the greatest attraction of Kobarid and the main point of the program especially for tourists from Italy.

The surroundings of Kobarid are very picturesque. The borders of the Triglav National Park with Slovenia's highest peak are not far away. The Alpine peak of Krn, 2,245 m above sea level, towers above the village, and numerous hiking trails leading deep into the mountains begin from the village.
