Izola is a popular resort on the southern part of the Slovenian coast. There are nice and well-developed beaches here, and the town resembles Italy with its climate.
For centuries Izola was on the island and remained under the influence of Venice, and later, other Italian centers. When the water level began to rise, and communication with the mainland became difficult, the spit connecting the island to the mainland was made. Today, the city surrounded by beaches is at the end of a peninsula overlooking the sea.
The historic center of Izola is located on a protruding promontory. The bell tower of the fourteenth century church of St. Maura built according to Venetian designs. Around him are narrow, winding streets with Gothic, Baroque and eclectic tenements. Among them you can also find former palaces, including the Rococo palace of Besenghi degli Ughi or Manzoli's 15th-century palace modeled on the Venetian.
There is a new part of town on the mainland. It consists primarily of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and bars. There is also a modern yacht marina and beaches around. Most of them are stony and pebbly, although there are also those that have been concreted in the old Yugoslavian custom.
The area around the resort is conducive to active tourism. There are a lot of cycling and walking paths, you can also do water sports such as sailing, sea kayaking or windsurfing. In summer, Izola hosts an international gathering of sailing boats and yachts called the Isola Boat Show.
