Astronomical Observatory
Local name: Astronomické observatórium
Astronomical observatory located on the peak of Lomnica, at an altitude of 2632 m above sea level. Continuous observations of the solar corona are carried out here, which is possible only in a few places in the world (due to the need for locations above 2000 m above sea level). It is also the highest place in Slovakia where people constantly work.
Construction of the facility lasted from 1936 to 1940. At the same time, a cable car was brought to the top. Initially, the building was used only to conduct weather observations, which take place regularly from October 1940. The break took place only from January 1945 to the end of 1946. In the years 1956-1962 a new wing with an astronomical dome was built in Łomnica and since then a branch observatory has been operating here the observatory to us by the Łomnicki Pond. Both institutions are looked after by the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
At the top of the mountain is also the Monitor Neutrons of the Faculty of Space Physics of the Institute of Experimental Physics in Košice.
