Churche of Annunciation

Local name: Kostol Zvestovania

The Franciscan church of the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary (Kostol Zvestovania) is the oldest religious building in Bratislava. The Gothic temple was rebuilt several times after being damaged, which is why it has a Renaissance vault in the nave. Inside, you can see the Baroque main altar with a painting of the Virgin Mary painted on glass.

The Franciscans came to Bratislava in 1278. Soon a gothic, one-nave church was built for them. In 1590, during the earthquake, the vault in the nave collapsed. They were rebuilt in the Renaissance style. Gothic walls and the presbytery vault have been preserved. In the 18th century the church underwent renovation. Its effect is a baroque facade with pilasters, which can be admired to this day. At that time, a new main altar, baroque side altars and a pulpit were placed inside.
