Hlavné námestie
Local name: Hlavné námestie
Hlavne Namestie is the Old Town Square in Bratislava. The town's main square is surrounded by tenements and palaces, mainly from the 19th and early 20th centuries. There is also the Old Town Hall and the Maximilian Fountain. Every year before Christmas there is the largest Christmas market in Slovakia on the market.
The market was marked out in the 13th century, when Bratislava's urban layout was shaped. Currently, most of the houses at the square come from the late 18th and 19th centuries. These are primarily palaces of influential Austrian and Hungarian families as well as imperial offices. You can see here the rococo palaces of Kutscherfeld and Aponiho, the neo-Baroque house of Franciszek Palugyay and an Art Nouveau tenement house from the beginning of the 20th century belonging in the past to a Hungarian bank.
