Târgu Jiu is a town at the southern foot of the Carpathians associated with the figure of Constantin Brâncuși, one of the most important Romanian artists of the 20th century. His outdoor sculptures are set in many parts of the city.
The history of the city dates back to ancient times, when there was a Dacka settlement here, and then a Roman settlement. The modern city was founded in the 13th century as a trade center of Wallachia. It quickly became the seat of local authorities and a thriving center of culture. Today the most important monument in the area is the Horezu Monastery, located several kilometers from the city, entered on the UNESCO list.
