Women's Cave
Local name: Peştera Muierilor
The cave system stretches for about 7 km and consists of four levels. The lowest are available for speleologists. A higher level corridor measuring nearly 600 m in length is available for public viewing. The main attraction here is the hall, which thanks to calcite infiltrates resembles a gothic dome.
The remains of numerous animals, including bears, lions and wolves, were discovered in the cave. An interesting fact is the complete petrified remains of cave bears. The most important finds, however, include bone fragments most likely belonging to three people from the Paleolithic period. The oldest are skull bones, approximately 30,000 years old.
The name of the cave refers to its frequent use as a shelter for nearby women and children, who for centuries often gathered here during wars and other threats. It is also worth mentioning that this was the first electrified cave in Romania.
