The monastery complex was founded at the foot of the Piatra Polovragilor mountain at the beginning of the 15th century. However, it is worth knowing that the Byzantine-style buildings that have survived to modern times were built on old foundations in the 17th century.
The most valuable monuments in the monastery include paintings and icons made in 1713. On both sides of the entrance there are two paintings unique in Romania dedicated to the Holy Mount Athos. The monastery rooms are arranged around the church from the east, south and west. From the north, the complex is fenced with a high wall. The whole gives the impression of a strictly protected fortress.
From the southern side, a massive gate leads to the interior of the complex, above which stands the belfry erected during the reign of hospodar Konstantyn Brâncoveanu, that is at the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The gate from the north leads to the hospital of St. Mikołaj, founded in 1732.
