Monastery of St. John the New

Local name: Mănăstirea Sfântul Ioan cel Nou

The historic Orthodox monastery was founded in 1514-1522. The complex includes an Orthodox church, 19th-century abbey buildings, a 17th-century chapel, a belfry, which also serves as a lighthouse, and an Orthodox church. The latter belongs to the group of painted Moldavian churches, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Contrary to most of the painted churches, only fragments of external paintings have been preserved in this temple, dating back to 1534. Among them, one can see the Tree of Jesse, which is an artistic representation of the family tree of Christ, scenes of the Last Judgment and the heavenly hierarchy. Interior paintings have also been preserved to a small extent, as they have been partially repainted several times over the centuries.

The monastery is dedicated to St. Jan Nowe of Suceava, a Moldavian monk who was martyred in the 13th century. His relics are stored here. Thanks to them, the monastery is one of the main pilgrimage sites in Moldova.
