The district of Viana do Castelo is the northernmost part of Portugal. It belongs to the fragment of the coast called Costa Verde, which is the best place to relax in the north of the country.
The capital of the region is Viana do Castelo, a coastal city surrounded by forested mountains. On one of them rises the Sanctuary of St. Luizy, which you can reach by a funicular or numerous walking routes. Next to the sanctuary there is an archaeological site with the remains of a settlement from the early Middle Ages.
The beaches in the area are sandy and wide, and the most famous of them is Praia do Cabedelo. Although the water is not as warm here as in the south of Portugal, and the blowing winds reduce the temperature, thousands of tourists relax each year. Costa Verde is considered one of the better places for surfing and other water sports.
