Local name: Forte Santiago da Barra
The fortress acquired its current shape in the second half of the year. 16th century during the reign of Philip II of Habsburg, however, its history dates back to the 13th century. The building was declared a national monument. The fort defended the city against pirate attacks. The symbol of the castle is Torre da Roqueta.
