The Serralves Museum is located on the Severralves estate in the rural area of Porto. Through collections, temporary exhibitions, performances, education and public programs, publishing initiatives as well as national and international cooperation, the museum promotes understanding and appreciation of contemporary art and culture. The museum mainly presents contemporary art, which can be seen at both permanent and temporary exhibitions.
The architectural plans of the Serralves Museum were first drawn up in 1991 by the famous architect Alvaro Siza. The new building was finally opened in 1999. The Serralves Museum is a minimalist building harmoniously integrated with the surrounding urban area and the pre-existing gardens, park and villa spaces.
