Located in the heart of Porto, Serralves combines the Museum of Contemporary Art, House of Art Deco Casa de Serralves and Park in one place, as well as recreational facilities, shops and various restaurants. In 1996, the entire complex was classified as a public facility due to its architectural applications. The property is owned by the Serralves Foundation.
Villa and Park Serralves are privileged places for the presentation of special collector's and travel exhibitions organized in cooperation with cultural partners from Portugal and abroad. A dynamic program of cinema, contemporary dance, music and performance is presented at the museum. The Auditorium and the Library also hold talks, lectures, symposia, during which the audience can participate in discussions and debates on the artistic and cultural topics of modern times.
The new Serralves museum building was designed by the architect Sizia Vieir. The project involved implanting the garden and orchard into the natural surroundings, while at the same time redesigning the functional space.
