The Botanical Garden of Porto is located on the estate of Quinta do Campo Alegre. The historic garden is divided into three parts, which are separated by a hedge of stone bushes. You can see ponds with water lilies, greenhouses full of different species of succulents and tropical plants. In the garden there is an arboretum with a rich collection of trees. Some of them are several centuries old. Additionally, garden visitors can admire the palace of Andresen and Salabert.
Campo Alegre Estate was founded in 1895 by the well-known Porto wine distributor - Joao Henrique Andresen. The estate initially consisted of 4 ha of an old park, an ornamental garden and a classical palace from the 19th century. The property was acquired by the Portuguese state in 1949. In 1951 a botanical garden was opened on the estate, which is managed by the University of Porto.
