The Church of Our Lady of Lapa is part of a larger complex, including the Lapa Cemetery, Primary School and Lapa Brotherhood Hospital. In the presbytery is buried the heart of the Portuguese king Pedro IV, which he offered in the will of the brotherhood. The church is known for its monumental pipe organ considered to be one of the best and most beautiful instruments of this type on the entire Iberian Peninsula. Thanks to them, famous concerts take place in the temple.
The Brotherhood of the Mother of God from Lapa was founded in 1755. Its members quickly began building a new church - the foundation stone was laid on July 17, 1756. However, the construction was completed only in 1863. Built for over a hundred years, the temple has both rococo and neoclassical architectural elements. The first design was commissioned to architect Joao Glama Ströberle, but ultimately the work was managed by Figueiredo Seixas.
