Igreja do Carmo is a really unusual church. It is famous primarily for its side facade covered with traditional azulejo blue tiles - it is the largest decoration of this type in all of Porto. On a large ceramic panel, the work of Silvestre Silvestrie, the reception of novices to the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was immortalized. The temple was built in the 18th century and is a great example of late baroque architecture.
The Carmo Church also seems really huge. This is because in fact there are two temples next to each other - Igreja do Carmo and Igreja das Carmelitas, separated from each other by a building only 1 meter wide. This house was once inhabited. It was built because of the then law, which said that two churches could not share the wall with each other. At the same time, it was a barrier between monks and nuns.
