Óbidos is a beautiful, historic town with perfectly preserved buildings and defensive walls. In addition to picturesque alleys and a wonderful atmosphere, the city is also famous for the production of Ginjinha liqueur, which is served in chocolate glasses.
From the 13th century, Óbidos was a wedding gift received by Portuguese queens. This custom lasted until the 19th century, and the royal care gave the city a chance for rapid development. Today, Óbidos is a real Portuguese gem with a perfectly preserved old town enclosed in walls.
Low, whitewashed houses standing on cobbled streets dominate here. Among them, there are the towers of several churches, the interiors of which are decorated with azulejos tiles. Many houses now have restaurants and shops selling handicrafts, mainly textiles and wooden items. You can also buy the Ginjinha cherry liqueur, which is a local souvenir, at almost every turn. Before you buy it, you can taste it from chocolate glasses and cups.
When visiting Óbidos, you cannot miss one of its main attractions, the medieval castle of Óbidos. The stronghold is now a luxury hotel, but you can enter the courtyard and view it from a distance. A place eagerly visited by tourists is also the baroque church of the Sanctuary of Jesus da Pedro, standing outside the buildings, on one of the surrounding hills. It is a beautiful building on a central plan with an elaborate facade and richly decorated interior.
