National Theater of São Carlos

Local name: Teatro Nacional de São Carlos

Saint Charles National Theater is Lisbon's main opera and operetta stage. Located in the Chiado district. It is a neoclassical building with elements of Rococo decorations. The theater room is oval with several floors of richly decorated boxes.

The theater was built after a great earthquake from 1755. Its construction was financed by Lisbon bankers. The design was made by Jose de Costa a Silva, who was inspired by the La Scala in Milan and the St. Charles Theater in Naples. The first performance took place in 1793. Since then, it is the main opera stage of the country.

The theater building was erected in the neoclassical style. The regular facade is decorated with a portico and decorated with a clock and Portuguese coats of arms. The main hall has a vault decorated with painting decorations. Boxes with curved balustrades are decorated with gilded Rococo floral motifs.
