The church of Saint Dominic in Lisbon is one of the most important Baroque monuments in the city. It is a temple on the Latin cross plan with a towerless facade topped with carved gables. The interior of the church is partially destroyed after the fire of 1959.
The church of Saint Dominic and the Dominican monastery located next to it were built in the 13th century. It underwent a thorough reconstruction after a great earthquake from 1755. He received a baroque look. He was one of the leading achievements of Portuguese Baroque and a model for other buildings. In 1959, the interior of the church lit with candles on the altar. It was not reopened until 1997.
During the renovation, it was decided to partially leave the damage as a testimony to the tragedy that met the building. The walls are partly rooted and devoid of painting decorations. Figures were created in empty niches and niches. This creates an amazing atmosphere. During the fire, a valuable relic kept in the monastery burnt - a handkerchief of Łucja Dos Santos, who witnessed the apparitions at Fatima in 1917.
