The church of Saint Isabella is located outside the very center of Lisbon. It is a Baroque-Classicist building with a two-tower facade and a single-nave interior with side chapels. At the beginning of the 21st century, the barrel vault was covered with a painting imitating the sky by Michael Biberstein.
The church was built in 1765. This is one of the first examples of neoclassicalism in Lisbon. Behind the still baroque, two-tower facade is the interior ended with a small presbytery. The one-space main nave is illuminated with windows in the upper part of the walls and lined with stone cladding of various types of marble.
At the time of building and finishing the church, there was not enough resources to decorate the vault. It was only completed in the 21st century. Michael Biberstein was invited to cooperate. The vault has the form of a patchy sky, covered with fog and clouds, which perfectly complements the peaceful and dignified interior of the church.
