Town Hall in Zielona Góra

Local name: Ratusz w Zielonej Górze

The Town Hall in Zielona Góra has a long history dating back to the 15th century. The present appearance of the building complemented with a Gothic-Baroque tower is an effect of many reconstructions in various historical periods. The premises are occupied by the Civil Registry Office, the City Council, and the Tourist Information.

The creation of the first town hall building is still shrouded in mystery, and although historians for many years considered it in the beginning of the 18th century, during the renovation in 1989, architectural elements dating back to the 15th century have been discovered. Judgment is also disturbed by the turbulent history of the object, which had been repeatedly burnt down by fires and had been even more often rebuilt. Starting from the city fire in 1582, the town hall had changed its appearance in 1627, 1651, 1742, 1846, 1919, and the tower was transformed in 1669, 1777 and in 1801. The last modernization resulted in a construction error, as a result of which the dome covering the tower is crooked.

The Zielona Góra Town Hall has a characteristic green plastering color. This is the effect of the renewal of the object yet at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and since then, for almost 190 years, it has kept this characteristic design.
