Museum of Medallic Art

Local name: Muzeum Sztuki Medalierskiej

The Museum of Medallic Art was established in 1964 and is a branch of the City Museum of Wrocław. It consists of over 50 thousand medals, various state decorations, orders, medallions, badges, and plaques. Most of them were made by Polish artists. There is a section solely dedicated to medals and state decorations which were made after 1945 and are related to Silesia. The museum is the only facility in Poland which specializes in medallic art and phaleristics.

The Museum of Medallic Art doesn't have a permanent exhibition - its items are part of the exhibition "1000 years of Wrocław" which is presented in the Royal Palace. The collection contains several dozen thousand items but only 170 are displayed. One of the most valuable items is the medal from 1644 which commemorates the opening of the library near the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene.

The museum also publishes its own medals. It released over 100 unique medallic works designed by cooperating artists. The facility has its own library which contains all available periodicals related to medallic art. The museum releases the bulletin with descriptions of selected items.
